Present Continuous-Progressive Tense in English – Structure, Steps & Examples

Well Present continuous tense is basically about about an action which is happening currently or in Progress. In Urdu we say “Raha Hai” “Rahi hai” and “Rahay hein “ etc.

So that is why it’s also known as Present Progressive Tense because it represent an action which is happening in present time or the action that is currently in progress, For example (playing, Going, Eating) etc…

Rule # 1:

We use three helping verbs in this tense ‘is’, ‘am’ and ‘are’ While we can say that “IS” being used with Singular (we have studied about singular in our previous lesson).

“Are” is being use with Plurals ( That we have also studied in previous lecture).

Now lets talk about “am” it is always used with Plural “I”. Also we add “ing” with the first form of the verb.

Some examples are here:

I am eating dinner.
Urdu: میں رات کا کھانا کھا رہا ہوں۔
Hindi: मैं रात का खाना खा रहा हूँ।

She is studying for her exams.
Urdu: وہ اپنے امتحانات کی تیاری کر رہی ہے۔
Hindi: वह अपनी परीक्षाओं के लिए पढ़ रही है।

They are watching a movie.
Urdu: وہ فلم دیکھ رہے ہیں۔
Hindi: वे फिल्म देख रहे हैं।

He is playing football with his friends.
Urdu: وہ اپنے دوستوں کے ساتھ فٹ بال کھیل رہا ہے۔
Hindi: वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ फुटबॉल खेल रहा है।

The cat is sleeping on the bed.
Urdu: بلی بستر پر سو رہی ہے۔
Hindi: बिल्ली बिस्तर पर सो रही है।

Rule # 2:

Negative Sentences:

We use not after helping verbs (is, am, are).

Here are the few examples:

I am not watching television right now.
Urdu: میں ابھی ٹیلی ویژن نہیں دیکھ رہا۔
Hindi: मैं अभी टेलीविजन नहीं देख रहा हूँ।

She is not attending the meeting this afternoon.
Urdu: وہ آج دوپہر اس میٹنگ میں شامل نہیں ہے۔
Hindi: वह आज दोपहर उस मीटिंग में शामिल नहीं है।

They are not playing video games at the moment.
Urdu: وہ اس وقت ویڈیو گیمز نہیں کھیل رہے ہیں۔
Hindi: वे इस समय वीडियो गेम नहीं खेल रहे हैं।

He is not studying for the exam tomorrow.
Urdu: وہ کل کے امتحان کی تیاری نہیں کر رہا۔
Hindi: वह कल की परीक्षा की तैयारी नहीं कर रहा है।

The birds are not flying south for the winter.
Urdu: پرندے موسم سرما کے لیے جنوب کی طرف نہیں اڑ رہے ہیں۔
Hindi: पंछी सर्दी के मौसम के लिए दक्षिण की ओर नहीं उड़ रहे हैं।
