Past Indefinite Tense in English and also With Urdu/Hindi examples

Introduction about Past Tense:

Previously we have studied about Present Tense complete. Now it’s time for Past Indefinite tense on first. Which is the most easiest tense i can say that. Well before moving forward i’d like to recommend you first study about the forms of Verbs.
Also study about basic definition of Tense. Lets begin Past Tense well we all know that it also four types although we already know about Past any action that happened already.

Types of Past Tense:

  1. Past indefinite Tense
  2. Past Continuous Tense
  3. Past Perfect Tense
  4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

In this Lesson we will discuss about Past indefinite tense only.

Past Indefinite Tense:

It’s also called Simple past tense. It refers to state or action that were completed way before the present time. In urdu Past indefinite tense identified as Tha, Thay , Thi, Ta , Tay, Ti, saka, Saki etc etc.

English: I visited my friend yesterday.
Urdu: میں کل اپنے دوست کی زیارت کی۔
Roman Urdu: Main kal apne dost ki ziyarat ki.

English: She cooked dinner last night.
Urdu: اس نے کل رات کو دوپہر کا کھانا پکایا۔
Roman Urdu: Usne kal raat ko dopehar ka khana pakaya.

English: They watched a movie on Sunday.
Urdu: انہوں نے اتوار کو ایک فلم دیکھی۔
Roman Urdu: Unhon ne itwaar ko ek film dekhi.

English: He played football with his friends yesterday.
Urdu: اس نے کل اپنے دوستوں کے ساتھ فٹ بال کھیلا۔
Roman Urdu: Usne kal apne doston ke saath football khela.

English: We studied English grammar last semester.
Urdu: ہم نے پچھلے سمسٹر انگریزی گرامر پڑھا تھا۔
Roman Urdu: Hum ne pichle semester English grammar parha tha.

Rule # 1:

In this tense we Use Second form of verb only with the both singular and Plurals (He, She, It, name, I ,we, you and they).

Subject + verb + Object .

Lets straight jump to the example:

She danced at the party last night.
Urdu: وہ کل رات پارٹی میں ناچی۔
Roman Urdu: Woh kal raat party mein nachi.

He walked to the store this morning.
Urdu: اس نے آج صبح دکان تک چل کر کھریداری کی۔
Roman Urdu: Usne aaj subah dukaan tak chal kar khareedari ki.

The cat slept on the couch all afternoon.
Urdu: بلی نے پورے دن کانپے پر سویا۔
Roman Urdu: Billi ne poore din kanpe par soya.

The student studied for the exam yesterday.
Urdu: طالب علم نے کل امتحان کے لئے مطالعہ کیا۔
Roman Urdu: Talib e ilm ne kal imtehan ke liye mutala kiya.

The bird flew away when I opened the window.
Urdu: جب میں کھڑکی کھولی، پرندہ دھیما شر کر گیا۔
Roman Urdu: Jab main khidki kholi, parinda dheema shor kar gaya.

Plural Subjects:

They played football in the park yesterday.
Urdu: انہوں نے کل پارک میں فٹ بال کھیلی۔
Roman Urdu: Unhon ne kal park mein football kheli.

We sang songs around the campfire last weekend.
Urdu: ہم نے پچھلے ہفتے آتشبازی کے گرد گانے گائے۔
Roman Urdu: Hum ne pichle haftay aatishbaazi ke gird gaane gaaye.

The dogs barked loudly when the mailman arrived.
Urdu: کتے بھونکنے لگے جب ڈاکیہ آیا۔
Roman Urdu: Kutte bhonkne lage jab dakiya aaya.

The children laughed and played in the playground.
Urdu: بچے ہنسنے اور کھیلنے کے لئے پارک میں گئے۔
Roman Urdu: Bachay hansne aur khelne ke liye park mein gaye.

The flowers bloomed beautifully in the spring.
Urdu: پھول بہار میں خوبصورتی سے کھلے۔
Roman Urdu: Phool bahar mein khubsurati se khile.

Rule # 2:

Well we use Did as a helping verb here. While Must remember one thing when we use did as a helping verb in a sentence then there will be no other second form be used. Because helping verb Did is already in second form so that’s why we’ll only use that.

She did dance at the party last night.
He did walk to the store this morning.
The cat did sleep on the couch all afternoon.
The student did study for the exam yesterday.
The bird did fly away when I opened the window.

Rule # 3 (Negative sentences):

We will use Not in this right after the helping verb (did).

Examples:

She did not dance at the party last night.
He did not walk to the store this morning.
The cat did not sleep on the couch all afternoon.
The student did not study for the exam yesterday.
The bird did not fly away when I opened the window.

Rule # 4 Interrogative sentences:

Basically interrogative sentences are which contain some kind of question or question mark at the end of the sentence. In this scenario we will use Helping verb in the beginning of the sentence.

Examples:

Did she dance at the party last night?
Urdu: کیا اس نے کل رات پارٹی میں ناچا؟
Roman Urdu: Kya usne kal raat party mein nacha?

Did he walk to the store this morning?
Urdu: کیا وہ آج صبح دکان تک چل کر آیا؟
Roman Urdu: Kya woh aaj subah dukaan tak chal kar aaya?

Did the cat sleep on the couch all afternoon?
Urdu: کیا بلی نے پورے دن کانپے پر سویا؟
Roman Urdu: Kya billi ne poore din kanpe par soya?

Did the student study for the exam yesterday?
Urdu: کیا طالب علم نے کل امتحان کے لئے مطالعہ کیا؟
Roman Urdu: Kya talib e ilm ne kal imtehan ke liye mutala kiya?

Did the bird fly away when you opened the window?
Urdu: کیا پرندہ جب تم نے کھڑکی کھولی، بھاگ گیا؟
Roman Urdu: Kya parinda jab tumne khidki kholi, bhag gaya?
